Arizona in many ways is a land of surprising contrast.  Though thought by most as an arid desert, the state offers a stunning variety of flora, fauna and environments.

The perception of Arizona as a sunny state is certainly true however, as low humidity and over 330 days of sunshine a year ensure there's an 86% of a beautiful day each and every day in Arizona.

Although Arizona is most often associated with the old west and seen as a new frontier state, Arizona has been populated since 9,500BC and has a long and storied history.

Montezuma's Castle
Montezuma's CastleWhen early settlers of Arizona discovered this stunning 20 room, limestone cliff dwelling they assumed it must have been built by the great Aztec Emperor Montezuma.  In fact it was built by the by the Sinaqua indians in the early 1300s and had been abandoned some one hundred years prior to Montezuma's reign.   The site has been protected by a National Monument, set aside by President Theodore Roosevelt as one of our nation's very first national monuments.

The site includes a wheelchair accessable scenic trail around the site and a visitor's center with a revolving series of exhibits documenting theories about the construction and life within the castle.

Casa Grande Ruins
Casa GrandeThe breathtaking Casa Grande Ruins are emblemeatic of the mysteries that surround the earliest settlers of Arizona.  The early indians that built this impressive structure inhabited this area for over a thousand years, building irrigation systems, permanent settlements and maturing into sophisticated agrarian cultures.  By the time the first Europeans arrived these cultures and villages had all disappeared, leaving behind many fragments of their past life but none more impressive than the mysterious Casa Grande Ruin.

The Casa Grande site also holds distinction as the first cultural and prehistoric site to be protected by the US Government, set aside in 1982 by President Benjamin Harrison for future generations.

Other Historical Sites

Montezuma's WellArizona is rife with the fascinating remnants of early indian societies.  In addition to the Casa Grande and Montezuma's Castle ruins, there are historical sites of note like the ancient Tuzigood hilltop Pueblo near the historic mining town of Jerome; Montezuma's well, a natural spring fed well flanked by cliff dwellings also mistakenly attributed to Montezuma; the Hubbell Trading post, the oldest continuously operating trading post in Arizona; and a number of Spanish Missions like Mission San José de Tumacácori and Mission San Cayetano de Calabazas.
